FAQ

We are proud that all of our activities take place at one site.  All La mer’s skincare products are developed in our in-house laboratories and produced in compliance with GMP ISO 22716 at the company headquarters in Cuxhaven.

Why is Sea Silt Extract so special?

Our unique Sea Silt Extract is obtained using a patented extraction process and is only produced by La mer. The extract contains the sea’s minerals, trace elements and organic nutrients in a highly concentrated form. These substances help the skin by restoring its natural moisture and enabling it to store it in moisture depots. The skin’s natural protective barrier is strengthened and the skin becomes more resistant to external stress.

Why is there another cosmetics firm called La mer?

As well as our La mer brand, Estée Lauder also has a cosmetics brand called LA MER, which is sold through cosmetics shops. Both companies have signed a co-existence agreement. We sell our La mer skincare at selected pharmacies and beauty salons. The product formulas are different.

Are La mer products suitable for allergy sufferers?

Throughout the development process for all La mer products we attach great importance to ensuring that they are exceptionally well tolerated. Our products are free from PEG, paraffin, parabens and silicones. People who suffer from allergies and reactive skin will find a wide choice of products in our MED range. This range does not contain anything that could be problematic for allergy suffers. If you know you are allergic to a certain substance our customer services team will be more than happy to advise you on which of your products to use.

Does La mer carry out animal testing?

La mer Cosmetics AG has its origins and headquarters in Cuxhaven at the heart of the Wattenmeer Nature Reserve in Lower Saxony, and we have a deep bond with this exceptional region and its unique flora and fauna. Animal protection is something we take very seriously. In Germany, a ban on animal testing for cosmetic products was introduced in 1998. Since La mer Cosmetics AG was founded we have never conducted animal testing nor asked others to do so on our behalf. Our in-house formulation experts select suitable ingredients and we use the latest technology to ensure that our products are exceptionally well tolerated without having to use animal testing. The skin-tolerance and function of our products are tested using in vitro methods or in vivo on volunteers. This means that we comply both with the latest standards in science and technology as well as the current statutory regulations.

Do La mer products contain microplastics?

As a manufacturer of marine cosmetics based in Cuxhaven, directly on the North Sea, the protection of the sea is naturally particularly close to our heart. We do not use solid microplastics in any of our products.

Are the La mer products vegan?

La mer stands for cosmetics with marine active ingredients. Our products are not certified with seals such as the Vegan Flower of the Vegan Society, but we do not use any ingredients of animal origin with the exception of beeswax, which is only contained in selected products. Nevertheless, it is true that our sea silt extract is not free of animal components, as the smallest animal components such as mussels, crabs etc. may be present as organic tidal flat components in our sea silt extract.

Why do we still use palm oil?

We use - as is usual in the cosmetics industry - relevant raw materials and additives in a number of products. These are produced, for example, on the basis of vegetable oils, such as coconut oil, rapeseed oil or even palm oil and palm kernel oil. In the raw materials industry there are different thoughts and approaches to the subject of palm oil, in relation to the associated environmental aspects. However, it has already become clear that a complete renunciation of palm oil is not a sustainable solution, as it increases the demand for alternative oils and thus only leads to a shift in the problem. One promising approach is "sustainably produced palm oil". The first important steps have already been taken on the raw materials market, but there is no final solution yet. We are monitoring the approaches on the way to sustainably produced palm oil very closely and are working on a strategy to create a long-term environmentally conscious and promising solution for us.
